The paediatric surgical patient, like any other surgical patient, can be vulnerable to pressure ulcers. Reducing pressure injury development in the paediatric surgical patient can be challenging, especially when there is a diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) coupled with open-heart surgery.  Paediatric patients with CHD are likely to have lower oxygen saturation and altered nutritional status so they may be at higher risk of experiencing skin breakdown.¹  The addition of a major cardiac surgery to the CHD diagnosis creates a twofold pressure ulcer risk for the patient.
